The Director-General (DG) of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Dr. John Kaseya, has named Nigeria’s former Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, as Senior Strategic Adviser.
This collaboration is designed to accelerate the continent’s drive toward robust healthcare systems and increased autonomy.
In an announcement on Monday, Dr. Kaseya noted that this partnership arrives at a “critical moment” for the region’s health landscape, as African nations grapple with the aftermath of global pandemics, consistent disease outbreaks, and fragile public health frameworks.
Through his official X account, Dr. Kaseya expressed his enthusiasm: “I am pleased to announce the appointment of Prof Yemi Osinbajo as Senior Strategic Adviser to the Director General of Africa CDC. At this critical moment for Africa’s health future, Prof Osinbajo’s experience and leadership will be instrumental as we advance the Africa Health Security and Sovereignty Agenda.”
The Director- General emphasized that the selection reflects the agency’s resolve to amplify Africa’s influence in international health discussions, adding, “Together, we will continue to strengthen Africa’s voice in global health and drive sustainable, African-led solutions for our continent.”
Osinbajo, a distinguished Professor of Law who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 2015 to 2023, contributes extensive expertise in international relations, policy restructuring, and national governance.
During his tenure under former President Muhammadu Buhari, he spearheaded vital economic and social investment initiatives that significantly impacted social protection and healthcare delivery.
Experts believe his inclusion in the Africa CDC signals a tactical move to improve policy alignment among African leaders, acknowledging that health security is now inseparable from national sovereignty and economic health.
As a central arm of the African Union, the Africa CDC has been the primary coordinator for managing crises like Ebola, Lassa fever, and COVID-19.
The agency is currently pushing for better disease monitoring, increased internal financing, and local vaccine manufacturing.
This is particularly vital given that Africa still relies on imports for over 90% of its medical supplies—a gap the Health Security and Sovereignty Agenda intends to close.
Osinbajo’s role is anticipated to be a catalyst for this mission, helping to secure political commitment and forge the high-level partnerships necessary for a self-reliant Africa.
