Former Governor of Rivers State and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has formally entered the 2027 presidential race under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), positioning himself as an aspirant focused on performance, governance experience, and measurable results.
Amaechi’s nomination form was obtained on his behalf on Friday at the ADC National Headquarters in Abuja by former Edo State Governor and party chieftain, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
The development is expected to reshape conversations within Nigeria’s opposition political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Supporters of the former minister described his entry into the race as a direct challenge that the opposition has lacked to mount a credible alternative to Nigerians.
Amaechi campaign group named “The CRA Advocacy Network” insisted that “the country requires tested leadership capable of addressing insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and infrastructure deficits.” They contended that former Governor Rotimi Amaechi embodies the type of leadership Nigeria needs at the moment.
According to the members of the Amaechi campaign group, the former Rivers Governor’s record in public office distinguishes him from many contemporary political actors.
“During his tenure as Governor of Rivers State, Amaechi tackled militancy and kidnapping, while also investing heavily in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and electricity.
“On insecurity, while banditry and kidnapping became a national industry, Amaechi delivered solutions. As Governor, he ended the militancy and kidnapping crisis in Rivers State.
“As Minister, by 2021 he had helped reduce maritime piracy in Nigerian waters by over 80 percent – the first major drop since 1994.
“On electricity, while the Federal Government consistently failed to provide power, Amaechi as Governor delivered 715 MW of generation capacity, seven transmission lines, 28 distribution stations, and 228 transformers to provide “24/7” electricity to the people of Rivers State.
“On cost of living, while leaders announce palliative committees, Amaechi eased the financial burden structurally. He provided free education – including books and uniforms – across 311 new primary schools and five model secondary schools and existing schools. He made healthcare free and accessible through 160 newly constructed health centres and existing ones.
“On jobs, he did not just promise employment; he engineered it. As Governor, he hired 13,210 teachers, 436 doctors, and 400 nurses. His Songhai Farm, Buguma Fish Farm, and banana plantation initiatives created thousands of jobs. He built two major interchanges, two flyovers, 25 bridges, 890 km of roads, and completed five shore protection projects – fueling massive job growth. He revived the businesses of over 10,000 micro‑entrepreneurs through the Rivers State Microfinance Agency. As Minister, he delivered 1,780 km of standard rail and the Lekki Deep Sea Port, generating over 11,000 direct jobs,” Eniola Ogunlewe emphasized while setting the records straight on Amaechi’s past achievements.
Political observers believe Amaechi’s official entry into the presidential race may intensify competition within the opposition space as political parties begin early positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.
