Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has handed first-time invitations to Saudi Arabia-based forward George Ilenikhena and Alverca left-back Isaac James for Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
According to an exclusive report by owngoalnigeria, the coach has also recalled Banik Ostrava defender Abdullahi Bewene, goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, midfielder Alhassan Yusuf and Monza midfielder Ebenezer Akinsamiro to the national team.
Ilenikhena earned his maiden senior call-up after making an impressive start to the season in Saudi Arabia.
The forward scored twice in his club’s 2-1 victory over Al Nassr last weekend, taking his tally to five goals in six appearances across all competitions.
Born in Nigeria but raised in France, the 19-year-old reportedly committed his international future to the Super Eagles after Chelle convinced him to represent Nigeria.
James, 22, has also been rewarded for his progress at Portuguese side Alverca.
The left-back has been on Chelle’s radar since breaking into the first team last season following his move from French club Lorient.
His inclusion comes as Nigeria deal with Zaidu Sanusi’s injury, which is expected to keep the defender out for around two months.
However, James faces competition from Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel, who have also operated at left-back despite primarily playing on the right.
Bewene is another player returning to the squad after making his international debut against Poland before delivering another impressive performance against Portugal.
His versatility, with the ability to play at right-back or in midfield, gives Chelle another option.
The Banik Ostrava defender will compete with Aina, Osayi-Samuel and Ryan Alebiosu for a place at right-back, although Bruno Onyemaechi is expected to remain the first-choice option.
Okonkwo, who recently joined Charlton Athletic from Wrexham, made his Super Eagles debut during the summer Unity Cup tournament and has now been brought back into the squad.
Yusuf has also earned a recall following a strong run of form for MLS club New England Revolution.
The midfielder impressed during Nigeria’s summer friendlies and has continued his good form at club level, registering five goals and two assists in 23 appearances.
Akinsamiro returns after missing the summer friendly matches because of illness.
Nigeria will begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign against Madagascar in Uyo on September 23 before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau four days later.
