The immediate past Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, has renewed concerns over the deplorable condition of the Benin–Asaba–Onitsha Expressway, recalling his persistent advocacy for the reconstruction of the critical federal highway during his time in the National Assembly.
Elumelu reflected on his interventions in the House of Representatives, where he repeatedly drew attention to the deteriorating state of the road and the hardship it imposed on millions of commuters, businesses and transporters.
The Benin–Asaba–Onitsha Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest economic corridors, serves as a major gateway linking the South-South and South-East regions. For years, motorists have lamented the poor condition of the highway, citing frequent accidents, prolonged travel times and significant economic losses.
Elumelu noted that while serving in the House of Representatives, he consistently advocated for urgent government action to rehabilitate the road, stressing that its strategic importance to national commerce and regional integration could not be overstated.
