• As INEC hiding under interpretation of court statement, withdraws recognition for the leadership of the only opposition coalition in Nigeria, an orchestrated move that seems to make the ruling party in Nigeria happy and hopeful of running unopposed in forthcoming polls and in the 2027 polls, there is currently fear in the camp of the ruling party in Nigeria as Nigerians call on the United States Government and the international community for intervention, some Nigerians even called for the “Venezuela experience” in Nigeria, in expression of nationwide anger and international outrage at INEC and its possible collaborators in the Nigerian Government
A political crisis has emerged in Nigeria as the electoral body hiding under the pretext of obeying court ruling, misinterpreted a court statement and withdrew recognition for the opposition coalition. This made Nigerians take to the streets in protest and across social media and the development immediately caught the attention of the US Government within less than forty-eight hours since the Nigerian political crisis started.
A very influential lobby group that has the ears of President Donald Trump and the United States Congress has reacted to the development and has since reported the Nigerian Government and the Nigerian electoral body, INEC, to the US Government, a major donor for the Nigerian Government and a key upholder of democracy and freedom across the world.
Many have come to describe what INEC did to the opposition coalition in Nigeria as an attack on democracy and attack on rule of law and the foundational principle of law, by the electoral body and the Government in Nigeria.
“The Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission (@inecnigeria) has withdrawn recognition of the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (@ADCNig) and suspended all official engagement with the party pending ongoing litigation. This action has effectively frozen Nigeria’s main opposition political party at a critical moment as it prepares to compete in the upcoming Nigerian presidential election, raising serious concerns about the opposition’s ability to organize and participate fully in the democratic process.
“At a time when Nigerians expect free, fair, and credible elections, any development that disrupts political participation, creates institutional uncertainty, or undermines the perceived independence of electoral bodies must be addressed with urgency and transparency. #Nigeria is not only Africa’s largest democracy, but also a critical strategic partner of the United States in regional security, economic stability, and counterterrorism. The integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process is therefore of direct importance to U.S. interests and global stability,” Von Batten-Montague-York said on Thursday, April 2, 2026; on its verified Twitter (now X) handle.
“Accordingly, the firm will be presenting its concerns to members of the United States Congress and the @realDonaldTrump Administration to ensure that the importance of free, fair, and transparent democratic processes in Nigeria remains firmly on the international agenda. We call on H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu (@officialABAT) to ensure that the conduct and outcome of the upcoming elections are beyond reproach, free from doubt, and fully reflective of the will of the Nigerian people,” the influential US group said.
