Security agencies, including the military, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force, have rescued 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and a civilian who were abducted in Imo State more than a week ago.
The victims were rescued during a joint, intelligence-led operation, bringing an end to a prolonged ordeal that has renewed concerns over the government’s failure to adequately protect citizens from kidnappers and other criminal elements.
Radar sources said the operation was launched after security agencies obtained intelligence on the whereabouts of the abducted victims, leading to their successful recovery.
The 20 prospective corps members and the civilian are currently receiving medical attention at a DSS medical facility in the state.
The abduction has heightened public anxiety over the safety of young Nigerians preparing to serve their country, particularly amid persistent attacks and kidnappings across the country. It has also raised fresh questions about the government’s ability to secure citizens and prevent vulnerable travellers and prospective corps members from falling into the hands of criminal gangs.
The security agencies have yet to officially disclose further details about the operation, including the exact location where the victims were rescued and whether any suspects were arrested.
