The Newton Jibunoh International Convention Centre (NJICC), a world-class conference and event facility located within the Nelson Mandela Gardens & Resort at the Asaba International Airport, was officially inaugurated on June 17, 2026, to coincide with World Desertification and Drought Day.
The centre, built to international standards, features a modern auditorium, breakout rooms, a documentary and exhibition gallery, a library, and a museum.
It is designed to host international conferences, corporate events, cultural exhibitions, academic programmes, and other major gatherings.
Named after renowned environmentalist and Founder of the Fight Against Desert Encroachment (FADE), Dr. Newton Jibunoh, OON, the facility honours his lifelong contributions to environmental sustainability, education, and cultural preservation.
Representing Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, at the inauguration, government officials reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to combating climate change, promoting land restoration, and supporting environmental sustainability.
The Governor praised Dr. Jibunoh’s decades-long efforts in the fight against desertification.
The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Obi Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, described the project as a major boost for Delta State’s profile in tourism, conferences, and knowledge exchange.
He said associating the centre with Nelson Mandela reflects enduring values of resilience, service, environmental responsibility, and commitment to humanity.
The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, CFR, also commended the vision behind the Nelson Mandela Gardens & Resort, stressing the importance of African unity and peaceful coexistence.
The Obi of Issele-Uku Kingdom, Agbogidi Engr. Nduka Ezeagwuna, alongside other traditional rulers and guests, reaffirmed their commitment to Pan-African cooperation and sustainable development.
The inauguration marks another milestone in the development of the Asaba International Airport corridor, strengthening Delta State’s position as a destination for business, tourism, culture, and international engagement.
The event was coordinated by a planning committee comprising Brig.-Gen. Hamisu Hassan (Rtd.), Jahman Anikulapo, Godfrey Chukwudifu Osakwe, fnipr, and Oluebube Okafor, who expressed confidence that the centre would attract local and international patronage while serving as a hub for research, policy dialogue, and sustainable development.
