Businesses and residents around Ibusa Junction on Nnebisi Road, Asaba, Delta State were jolted today after a large mango tree being felled crashed onto a nearby building, causing extensive damage to it.
The incident occurred during a tree-felling operation, reportedly initiated due to concerns over the tree’s safety following recent stormy weather conditions in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the property owner had contracted a lumber man to fell the ageing mango tree in order to prevent it from becoming a hazard to residents and owners of businesses in the proximate area.
However, while the tree was being felled, it unexpectedly toppled in the wrong direction and crashed onto a neighbouring building.
The impact damaged a significant section of the building’s staircase, and parts of the roof, leaving debris strewn across the premises.
Many traders and passersby were seen fleeing the area as the tree came down with a loud crash.
Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded, although the incident caused considerable panic among residents and business operators nearby.
An eyewitness who spoke at the scene said the operation appeared to be going smoothly before the tree suddenly shifted direction as it fell.
“Everyone was watching the tree being cut when it suddenly leaned toward the building. Within seconds, it came crashing down and damaged the structure. It was a frightening sight,” the witness said.
The fallen tree also obstructed part of the roadside, while branches and leaves littered the surrounding area.
Community members later assisted in clearing some of the debris to restore normal human and vehicular movements around the impacted area.
Residents have called for greater caution during tree-felling operations, especially in densely populated commercial areas, stressing the need for experienced professionals and adequate safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
Authorities are expected to assess the extent of the damage as discussions continue regarding repairs and liability for the losses incurred.

The growing concern about public safety made the state government to fell the trees which had served as wind shields, sources of fruits and effective shed for pedestrians from the scorch of the tropical sun, especially during the hot dry season.
