There was tension at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Thursday following an alleged attempt by security operatives to arrest former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, upon his arrival from Cairo, Egypt.
The claim was made by El-Rufai’s Media Adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, who stated that the former governor was approached by security agents shortly after landing but declined to accompany them due to the absence of any formal invitation or arrest warrant.
According to Adekeye, the operatives allegedly confiscated El-Rufai’s passport from one of his aides after he refused to comply with their request.
In a statement issued shortly after the incident, Adekeye said:
“Security agents today attempted to arrest Malam Nasir El-Rufai as he arrived on a flight from Cairo. Malam El-Rufai declined to follow them without a formal invitation. They however snatched his passport from an aide.”
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation or response from the relevant security agencies regarding the alleged incident.
