Social media platform, Tik Tok, has reportedly agreed to pay the American Government $400m in a settlement deal.
The deal , once effected, could insulate the platform and its owners/ operators from many other further legal scrutiny regarding some of its contents which experts say, could be potentially harmful to under age consumers of its services.
The deal, announced on Friday night, followed lengthy negotiations between the platform ‘s owners and the American government, represented by the Department of Justice ( (DoJ).
The DoJ, in the face of the deal, described the agreement as a win- win for both Tik Tok and parents and children in the country.
Tik Tok had yet to make a public statement on the deal, at press time.
However, former Meta Media Executive, Trevor Johnson, in his reaction, said he expects the deal to engineer a new culture of greater compliance by Tik Tok.
The deal, he implied, was fairly soft for Tik Tok.
The deal came at a time that social.media platforms, including Meta, have come under intense scrutiny by the American people and the government.
Meta, earlier this week, began putting appearance in a string of court cases in which it is being sued for inadequate safeguard for under-utilised age consumers of its services.
A coalition of Attorneys of 37 of America’s 50 states had sued it for harming the mental health of children by their exposure to allegedly addictive .
Meta says the suit, including the prospective damages to be awarded against it, could cost it in the neighbourhood of $1.4trillion.
Others put the potential total cost of the suits and the damages that could follow at $200billion , way below the figure Meta has bandied.
The social platform, which owns and operates Instagram and Facebook, has had a rough operational environment in America , of recent, following a series of punitive fines imposed on it by courts for allegedly failing to adequately safeguard children and other vulnerable persons from the harmful effects of its allegedly addictive platforms.
At least, two courts have imposed fines totalling more than $700m on Meta, which still has scores of other pending cases to contend with.
The annual profit range of Meta is in the range of $120billion
