The suspended Councillor representing Ezhionum Ward in the Ukwuani Legislative Council, Victor Chukwuemeke, has been remanded at the Ogwashiuku Correctional Centre..
The case stems from statements Victor allegedly made during an interview on Arise TV, where he accused the judiciary of being bribed to deliver a favourable judgment for the Chairman of Ukwuani Local Government.
He also allegedly claimed that the former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, had influenced the presiding judge.
The suspended councillor further allegedly accused the Ukwuani Local Government Chairman of using public funds meant for the development of the local government to settle debts allegedly owed by the former governor, Okowa.
He also allegedly claimed that the chairman was using council funds to pay members of his family. It was argued that these allegations were defamatory and damaging, leading to a petition against him and subsequent investigation and his arraignment by the Nigeria Police Force( NPF).
At the Federal High Court, Asaba, the prosecution informed the court of its readiness to commence trial and opposed the defendant’s application for bail.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Funmilola refused the bail application and ordered that Victor Chukwuemeke be remanded at the Ogwashiuku Correctional Centre. The case has been adjourned to 22 September 2026 for the commencement of trial.
