Despite their superiority, La Roja struggled to break down Argentina’s resilient defence until the second half of extra time.
Argentina suffered an early setback when defender Lisandro Martínez was forced off through injury in the 44th minute and replaced by Nicolás Otamendi. Lionel Scaloni’s side struggled to create meaningful opportunities and failed to register a shot on target throughout the match.
Spain’s task became easier after Argentina were reduced to 10 men when Enzo Fernández was sent off for a second yellow card following a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsí.
Nico Williams thought he had put Spain ahead in the first period of extra time, but the effort was ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
The breakthrough finally came late in extra time when Pedro Porro delivered a cross to the far post. Nico Williams nodded the ball into the path of Ferran Torres, who fired emphatically into the roof of the net to seal Spain’s historic victory.
The triumph marks Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title and ends Argentina’s reign as world champions.
