Eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned their membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a fresh political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawmakers, representing Mafara South, Maradun One, Bakura, Bukkuyum North, Gummi One, Bungudu North, Maru North and Kaura constituencies, announced their defection during plenary in Gusau, the state capital.
Although the lawmakers did not immediately disclose their new political platform, sources within the Assembly said they were expected to align with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which controls the Zamfara State Government.
The sources also indicated that the lawmakers could become part of the broader political alignment associated with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the emerging Rainbow Coalition. The reported alignment, however, had yet to be formally confirmed by the lawmakers as of press time.
The defection is significant given the composition of the 24-member Zamfara Assembly, with the movement of eight lawmakers potentially altering the balance of political forces within the legislature.
The development comes amid a wave of defections and political realignments across the country as political parties, elected officials and emerging coalitions position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Zamfara APC had not issued an official reaction to the lawmakers’ resignation as of press time.
