There has been a major political realignment as eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned their membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a major political development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawmakers, representing Mafara South, Maradun One, Bakura, Bukkuyum North, Gummi One, Bungudu North, Maru North and Kaura constituencies, announced their defection during plenary in Gusau, the state capital.
The development is coming amid growing political realignments across Zamfara and other parts of the country as politicians reposition ahead of the 2027 elections. Although the lawmakers have not officially disclosed their next political destination, sources within the Assembly said they are likely to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which currently controls the Zamfara State Government.
There have also been indications that the lawmakers could align with the broader political movement associated with Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and his Rainbow Coalition, although this has yet to be officially confirmed by the defecting lawmakers. The Zamfara State House of Assembly has 24 members, meaning the defection of eight lawmakers represents a significant shift in the composition of the legislature and could have implications for the balance of power in the House.
The latest development further highlights the growing political movement and defections being witnessed across the country as parties and political blocs intensify preparations for the 2027 elections. As of press time, the Zamfara State chapter of the APC had yet to issue an official reaction to the lawmakers’ resignation.
