The ancient community of Apa-Agila stood still in solemn reflection as it bid farewell to one of its most illustrious sons, Chief Dan Agbese—a towering figure in Nigerian journalism, a custodian of truth, and an elder whose life embodied honour, courage, and service.
On Friday, family members, political leaders, media professionals, and admirers gathered at Saint Rose Venerini Catholic Church to celebrate a man whose voice shaped national discourse and whose pen became a moral compass in Nigeria’s evolving democratic journey.
Representing the government and people of Benue State, Deputy Governor Sam Ode described the late Agbese not merely as a journalist, but as a symbol of intellectual courage and integrity. He noted that Agbese’s contributions transcended generations, earning him a permanent place in the state’s history. In recognition of his enduring impact, the Benue Printing and Publishing House has been renamed in his honour—a testament to a legacy carved in truth and service.
For many, Agbese was more than a public figure; he was a moral voice. Benue South senatorial aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Olofu, described his passing as a profound loss to Benue State and Nigeria. He portrayed the late journalist as a man whose courage never faltered and whose commitment to truth remained unshaken, even in the face of adversity.
Perhaps the most touching tribute came from his nephew, Philip Agbese, Member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency. His voice heavy with emotion, he spoke of a man whose legacy could fill volumes—yet whose humility made him approachable, whose wisdom guided many, and whose generosity uplifted countless lives.
“His life was not defined by titles,” he reflected, “but by values—truth, integrity, humility, and compassion. He did not just live; he inspired.”
In his homily, Bishop Michael Apochi reminded mourners that Chief Agbese’s life was a reflection of righteousness, urging all present to carry forward the virtues he exemplified.
Chief Dan Agbese’s journey through journalism was marked by distinction. As former Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch magazine and General Manager of Radio Benue, he helped shape the standards of professional journalism in Nigeria. His work was fearless, his convictions firm, and his loyalty to truth unwavering.
Yet beyond the newsroom and public life, he remained deeply rooted in his community—a mentor, an elder, and a beacon of wisdom.
Though he has departed from this earthly realm, his voice echoes still—in every journalist who chooses truth over convenience, in every citizen who believes in integrity, and in every generation that dares to speak with courage.
Chief Dan Agbese may be laid to rest, but his legacy lives on—etched permanently in the conscience of a nation he served with dignity.
