Nigeria has recorded significant diplomatic and institutional victories at the just-concluded 39th Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, further reinforcing its leadership role in advancing Africa’s economic integration, peace, security, and democratic governance.
A major highlight of the session was the Council’s agreement to grant Nigeria a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank. This landmark decision reflects Nigeria’s growing influence in shaping the continent’s financial architecture and strengthening Africa’s monetary integration framework.
The development also ensures Nigeria’s representation on the Board of the Technical Convergence Committee of the African Monetary Institute, the institution serving as the precursor to the establishment of the African Central Bank. The move is widely seen as recognition of Nigeria’s economic weight, technical expertise, and sustained commitment to continental financial cooperation.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, confirmed the development in a press statement issued today, describing the outcome as a strategic milestone for the country and the continent.
In the area of peace and security, the session also witnessed the successful election of candidates endorsed by the Economic Community of West African States to the Peace and Security Council of the African Union. The outcome reflects strong regional unity and ECOWAS’ collective commitment to promoting stability, conflict prevention, and peacebuilding across Africa.
Nigeria further demonstrated leadership in strengthening democratic governance by organising a Ministerial High-Level Panel on Regional Partnerships for Democracy. The forum attracted ministers, senior government officials, and international delegates, fostering dialogue on strengthening democratic institutions, promoting inclusive governance, and enhancing regional cooperation in sustaining democratic values.
These outcomes reaffirm Nigeria’s strategic role within the African Union and underscore its commitment to advancing Africa’s shared goals of economic integration, institutional development, peace, security, and sustainable development.
