Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, has said the state government has no evidence of any threat to the life of former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.
Aniagwu, who spoke on TVC’s Politics Tonight, said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was not in the business of threatening political opponents or any resident of the state.
Omo-Agege had alleged that threats to his life and that of his family were emanating from the Delta State Government House and warned that Governor Oborevwori should be held responsible should anything happen to him or his family.
The state government has previously denied the allegation. In August, Aniagwu dismissed the claim, while Omo-Agege subsequently called for an independent investigation into reported attacks involving his supporters.
Reacting to the allegation, Aniagwu said the administration’s priority was the security and welfare of all residents, irrespective of political affiliation.
He cited Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which provides that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.
According to him, the state government had held strategic meetings with traditional rulers, local government chairmen, political leaders and religious leaders across the state as part of efforts to strengthen security.
He added that the government had also established a security trust fund to mobilise resources for improving security in the state.
Aniagwu said Omo-Agege, as a former Deputy President of the Senate, also had personal security arrangements, in addition to the general security framework available to residents of the state.
“He moves freely in Delta State, and as a former Deputy President of the Senate, he still has security personnel around him,” Aniagwu said.
The commissioner maintained that the government could not establish a threat without evidence, stressing that allegations of threats should be supported by facts that could be investigated by the appropriate authorities.
He said the administration’s approach to the 2027 political season would be to focus on its record in office rather than engage in allegations and counter-allegations.
Aniagwu also said the state government had prioritised cooperation among security agencies, describing security as a collective responsibility that should not be restricted to political office holders.
He further dismissed concerns that political disagreements within the APC in Delta State could translate into threats, saying the party had brought together members from different political backgrounds following the movement into the APC.
However, Omo-Agege’s camp has maintained that allegations surrounding attacks on his supporters and threats against him warrant investigation, with his representatives calling for an impartial probe.
Aniagwu, meanwhile, said the government would continue to focus on governance and the delivery of projects across the state, insisting that its record should be the basis for assessing the administration.
