ATIKU-AMAECHI: A TICKET UNLIKE ANY SINCE 1999

Atiku and Amaechi campaign flyer

By Chinedu Okpalanma

There is no point pretending otherwise. Those who know me know that my political admiration has been firmly rooted in Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi from the first day he granted me audience and I listened to him speak on issues about governance & Nigeria. I still believe he possesses the courage, administrative capacity and clarity of purpose to lead Nigeria as President. My preference for Amaechi was therefore never borne out of hostility towards Atiku Abubakar. It was simply a reflection of my conviction that Amaechi represented the kind of leadership Nigeria urgently needed.

That is why his acceptance of the vice-presidential slot compelled me to reflect more deeply than I had anticipated. I questioned the decision, sought different perspectives and revisited my assumptions. Those conversations, together with a more detached assessment of the realities confronting Nigeria today, gradually led me to a conclusion I had not expected to reach. While some people may disagree on the political merits of the ticket, I have come to appreciate why many Nigerians see an Atiku Abubakar–Rotimi Amaechi partnership as one of the most consequential political combinations since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

What distinguishes this proposed ticket is not simply its political balance between North and South. Rather, it is the unusual depth of experience represented by both men. Since 1999, vice-presidential candidates have often been selected primarily to satisfy electoral balancing, regional considerations or party accommodation. In many cases, the vice president is perceived largely as a complement to the presidential candidate. This combination, however, would bring together two politicians who each possess substantial national profiles, extensive executive experience and independent political followings. Whether one supports them or not, both have built careers that extend well beyond regional politics.

Atiku Abubakar’s public service spans several decades. His years as Vice President under President Olusegun Obasanjo coincided with a period of significant economic reforms, including efforts aimed at fiscal restructuring, privatization, telecommunications expansion and improving the investment climate. His supporters regard him as one of the key drivers of economic policy during that period, while critics continue to debate aspects of those reforms and their long-term impact. Nevertheless, few would dispute that he has acquired extensive experience in economic governance, federal administration and coalition-building across Nigeria’s diverse political landscape.

Rotimi Amaechi’s career reflects a similarly broad administrative journey. From serving for eight years as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly to two terms as Governor of Rivers State, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and later Minister of Transportation, his public service has traversed virtually every major level of governance. As governor, he pursued reforms in education and infrastructure, while his tenure as Minister of Transportation saw major investments in rail infrastructure. His supporters see him as a decisive administrator willing to undertake difficult reforms; his critics argue that some initiatives fell short of expectations. Such differing assessments are part of any healthy democratic evaluation.

The significance of this combination therefore lies not merely in electoral arithmetic but in the breadth of institutional experience it represents. Collectively, the ticket would bring together legislative leadership, state administration, intergovernmental coordination, federal executive experience and national economic policy exposure. Few presidential tickets in Nigeria’s recent democratic history have combined such varied governance credentials.

This conversation is taking place against the backdrop of a country facing profound economic and social challenges. Inflation has eroded purchasing power, food prices remain high, businesses continue to grapple with rising operating costs, and many Nigerians are struggling with declining real incomes. The removal of fuel subsidy and the liberalization of the foreign exchange market were presented by the current administration as necessary structural reforms. Many economists agree that such reforms addressed longstanding distortions in the economy, but there is also broad acknowledgement that the social costs have been severe and that mitigation measures have not sufficiently eased the burden on ordinary citizens. At the same time, concerns about insecurity, unemployment and public confidence in institutions remain central issues in national discourse.

Against this background, it is understandable that many Nigerians are paying closer attention to leadership experience and perceived competence. Citizens increasingly appear less interested in political slogans than in the practical question of who possesses the experience, judgement and temperament required to navigate an exceptionally difficult period in the nation’s history.

That does not mean any opposition ticket would have an easy path in 2027. Incumbency remains one of the most powerful advantages in Nigerian politics. President Bola Tinubu and the governing party retain the benefits that come with controlling the federal government, including extensive political structures, institutional visibility and an established nationwide organisation. History shows that defeating an incumbent president in Nigeria requires not only public dissatisfaction but also an opposition capable of remaining united around a common objective.

It is in this context that the Atiku–Amaechi combination becomes politically significant. By bringing together two nationally recognised figures with complementary experience and established political networks, such a ticket has the potential to reshape political calculations across the country. Whether that potential ultimately translates into electoral success would depend on many variables, including party cohesion, campaign organisation, voter turnout, the broader opposition’s willingness to cooperate and, above all, the judgement of the Nigerian electorate.

Beyond electoral calculations, however, leadership is ultimately about vision. Observers have often associated Atiku Abubakar with a belief in expanding private enterprise, encouraging investment and using economic reforms to stimulate growth. Rotimi Amaechi, on the other hand, has frequently emphasised institutional discipline, infrastructure development and administrative efficiency. These are distinct but potentially complementary approaches to governance. Nigeria’s current circumstances demand both economic renewal and stronger institutions capable of implementing reforms effectively and consistently.

Whether one agrees with this ticket or not, its emergence has already contributed something valuable to the national conversation. It has shifted attention from identity and geography towards questions of competence, experience and preparedness for governance. That, in itself, is a conversation worth having.

As 2027 approaches, Nigerians will once again be called upon to make consequential choices about the country’s future. Those choices should be informed not by personality alone, nor by party loyalty, but by careful scrutiny of records, ideas, capacity and character. In a democracy as complex as Nigeria’s, no political ticket should be accepted uncritically or dismissed casually. Every serious proposition deserves to be examined on its merits, because the ultimate beneficiary—or victim—of those choices will be the Nigerian people.
