The Coalition of Registered Political Parties, CRPP, has risen, in the wake of the recent attacks on the Edo State Secretariat of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and on the residence of a national leader of the party, ex-governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, in Benin City, to condemn what it called “an attempt by the ruling APC government in the state to intimidate opposition parties into silence, through sponsorship of political brigandage,” emphasizing that the Governor Okpebholo-led administration in the state had so far displayed arrant incapability in tackling insecurity in the state.
The CRPP, in a recent Press Statement signed by its Zonal Chairman, Dr. Samson Isibor, a copy of which was made available to.newsmen maintained that “the dastardly act was outrageous and uncalled for,” even as it condemned the state government for resorting to criminal witch-hunting and intimidation of opposition political elements in the state.
The CRPP’s statement underscored the relevance of a pluralistic political party system, which tolerates divergent views and opinions, emphasizing that such refined characteristic defines the beauty of democracy.
Dr. Isibor noted in the press statement that “this APC’s brigandage is giving us a cause for concern; for this, we vehemently condemn the APC government in the state. The state government is required to protect the citizens of the state, not to witch hunt and intimidate members of the opposition. It is the beauty of democracy to have pluralistic political parties in the country, instead of trying to eliminate the opposition members.”
The statement, therefore, advised “the APC government to stop this unnecessary brigandage, which is capable of scaring away investors from the state. Allow opposition to exist.”
