In a recent interview on Symfoni TV on Sunday, July 19, 2026, elder statesman and former National Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Dr. Usman Bugaje, shared his views on the performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, arguing that growing public dissatisfaction could shape future political developments.
During the discussion, Bugaje said, “I don’t think defeating him is a problem; he has already defeated himself in a democracy,” suggesting that the administration’s handling of national issues could influence how Nigerians assess it at the polls.
According to him, many citizens remain concerned about the country’s economic situation, persistent insecurity, and the rising cost of living. He maintained that every democratic government is ultimately evaluated by its ability to improve the welfare of the people, strengthen security, and address the everyday challenges affecting citizens.
Bugaje also expressed concern over what he described as mounting pressure on democratic institutions and opposition politics. He argued that democracy functions best when political parties compete freely based on ideas, policies, and respect for the rule of law, rather than through the dominance of state institutions or undue political influence.
The former ACN National Secretary further stressed that leaders must remain accountable to the electorate, noting that public trust is earned through transparent governance, responsible leadership, and effective service delivery instead of political promises alone.
He added that Nigerians are closely observing how those in authority respond to the country’s numerous challenges and would ultimately express their views through democratic processes whenever elections are conducted.
Bugaje concluded by urging government officials at all levels to focus on tackling the nation’s pressing problems, including insecurity and economic hardship. He emphasized that rebuilding public confidence would require practical solutions, accountability, and policies that deliver meaningful improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
