Nigeria is often described as the “Giant of Africa” because of its enormous human and natural resources, entrepreneurial spirit, and strategic importance on the continent. Yet, despite its vast potential, the nation continues to grapple with persistent socio-economic and governance challenges that have constrained its development. While governments at various levels bear the constitutional responsibility of driving national development, the task of nation-building cannot be left to public institutions alone. Every Nigerian, irrespective of location, has a role to play.
Today, over 17 million Nigerians are estimated to be living outside the country’s borders. They constitute one of the largest and most influential African diaspora communities in the world. They are professors in leading universities, researchers in cutting-edge laboratories, captains of industry, entrepreneurs, medical professionals, diplomats, engineers, innovators, athletes, artists, and public servants contributing significantly to the economies of their host countries. The question, therefore, is not whether Nigerians in the diaspora possess the capacity to influence national development; it is whether that immense capacity is being fully harnessed for Nigeria’s progress.
History provides compelling evidence that diaspora communities have often played transformative roles in rebuilding nations. Following the Second World War, Jewish communities across the world made significant financial, intellectual, and technological contributions that accelerated the development of Israel into one of the world’s foremost innovation economies. China’s spectacular economic rise was substantially supported by overseas Chinese investors who channelled billions of dollars into manufacturing, technology, education, and infrastructure. India’s information technology revolution benefited immensely from Indian professionals returning from Silicon Valley and other global technology hubs, bringing with them expertise, investment, and global networks. Similarly, Ireland’s economic transformation was strengthened by strategic engagement with its diaspora, while Rwanda deliberately mobilised skilled professionals abroad to support national reconstruction following the 1994 genocide.
These examples demonstrate that when governments deliberately engage their diaspora and when citizens abroad retain a strong emotional and patriotic connection with their homeland, remarkable national transformation becomes possible.
Nigeria’s developmental challenges remain multidimensional. Insecurity continues to threaten lives and livelihoods in many parts of the country. Youth unemployment remains high despite the country’s youthful population. Infrastructure deficits in transportation, electricity, healthcare, water supply, and digital connectivity constrain economic productivity. The education sector struggles with inadequate funding, brain drain, obsolete facilities, and limited research capacity. Corruption and weak institutional capacity continue to undermine public confidence. Ethno-religious tensions, misinformation, disinformation , Mal-information and divisive narratives have also weakened social cohesion and national unity.
These challenges are undoubtedly formidable, but they are not insurmountable.
Encouragingly, Nigerians in the diaspora already make substantial contributions to national development. Beyond the billions of dollars remitted annually to support families and communities, diaspora professionals regularly organise medical missions that provide free healthcare services across the country. Nigerian academics abroad collaborate with local universities through research partnerships, visiting lectureships, curriculum development, and postgraduate supervision. Diaspora entrepreneurs continue to invest in agriculture, information technology, real estate, fintech, renewable energy, hospitality, manufacturing, and education. Many have established scholarships, mentorship programmes, innovation hubs, and start-up accelerators for young Nigerians.
The Nigerian entertainment industry has also benefited immensely from diaspora networks that have expanded global markets for Nollywood films, Afrobeats music, literature, fashion, and creative arts, significantly enhancing Nigeria’s soft power and international image.
However, these interventions remain fragmented and largely driven by individual initiatives rather than coordinated national strategy. The scale of diaspora contributions falls far below the enormous potential that exists.
What more can be done?
First, diaspora investment should increasingly move beyond remittances for consumption towards productive investments that create sustainable employment. Investments in manufacturing, agro-processing, renewable energy, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, education, housing, tourism, and digital technology have the potential to stimulate inclusive economic growth.
Second, Nigerian professionals abroad should be encouraged to participate in structured knowledge transfer programmes. Through virtual teaching, research collaboration, professional exchanges, mentoring, innovation partnerships, and temporary return schemes, valuable expertise can be shared without requiring permanent relocation.
Third, diaspora organisations can play a stronger role in correcting misinformation and projecting balanced narratives about Nigeria internationally. While constructive criticism remains essential in every democracy, persistent negative portrayals that ignore progress or exaggerate national failures often discourage investment, tourism, and international partnerships.
Fourth, Nigerians abroad should actively mentor young entrepreneurs, facilitate access to international markets, support technology transfer, attract venture capital, and create global opportunities for Nigerian businesses and innovators.
Fifth, highly accomplished Nigerians abroad should be intentionally integrated into national policy conversations through advisory councils, sectoral think tanks, innovation commissions, and strategic development initiatives.
Despite these opportunities, several impediments continue to discourage deeper diaspora engagement. Concerns about insecurity, inconsistent government policies, bureaucratic bottlenecks, corruption, weak protection of investments, limited access to reliable information, multiple taxation, and inadequate institutional coordination remain recurring complaints among Nigerians abroad. Many also express frustration over slow judicial processes, regulatory uncertainty, and limited transparency in public institutions.
Addressing these concerns requires deliberate policy action. Government must continue strengthening the rule of law, improving security, simplifying investment procedures, digitising public services, protecting property rights, combating corruption, and ensuring policy consistency. Incentives such as diaspora investment windows, tax concessions for strategic sectors, improved consular services, and efficient one-stop investment centres can further encourage greater participation.
Equally important is rebuilding trust between the Nigerian state and its citizens abroad. Trust cannot be legislated; it must be earned through transparency, accountability, responsiveness, and sustained engagement.
This is where the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has a unique and strategic role.
As Nigeria’s foremost public enlightenment institution, the NOA occupies a critical position in strengthening the emotional and patriotic bond between Nigerians at home and those living abroad. Through its mandate of civic education, national mobilisation, behavioural change communication, and value reorientation, the Agency can deliberately deepen diaspora engagement by promoting positive national narratives anchored on facts, progress, opportunities, resilience, and shared responsibility.
The Agency can facilitate regular dialogues with diaspora communities, partner with Nigerian missions abroad, universities, professional associations, faith-based organisations, and cultural groups to promote national consciousness. It can showcase inspiring stories of Nigerians making meaningful contributions both at home and abroad, thereby reinforcing the message that every citizen has a stake in nation building regardless of geographical location.
The Nigerian Identity Project provides a powerful framework for reconnecting Nigerians in the diaspora with their homeland by fostering a renewed sense of belonging, pride, and shared responsibility. Likewise, the National Values Charter offers an enduring social contract that defines the reciprocal obligations between citizens and Leaders in all sectors. Its core values of; Discipline, Duty of care, Leadership, Equality, accountability, discipline, resilience, democracy, among others, are universal principles capable of inspiring Nigerians everywhere to contribute positively to national development.
Patriotism is not measured merely by where one lives but by the commitment one demonstrates towards the progress of one’s nation. Nigerians in London, Toronto, New York, Johannesburg, Dubai, Sydney, Beijing, and elsewhere remain ambassadors of Nigeria whether they choose to acknowledge it or not. Their achievements elevate Nigeria’s global reputation; similarly, their active participation in national development can accelerate the country’s transformation. They must realize that how they describe their country is the way that their hosts will perceive them as individuals. The child of a negatively stigmatized father Carry’s a stigma too.
The future Nigeria we all desire cannot be built by government alone. Neither can it be achieved by citizens within the country’s borders alone. Nation building demands a collective effort that transcends geography, politics, ethnicity, religion, and ideology.
The Nigerian diaspora represents one of the nation’s greatest untapped strategic assets. Properly mobilised, inspired, and engaged, it can become a powerful engine for investment, innovation, knowledge transfer, diplomacy, cultural influence, and sustainable development.
This is therefore a call to patriotic duty. Every Nigerian abroad should see themselves not merely as beneficiaries of another nation’s opportunities but as indispensable partners in the ongoing project of building a stronger, safer, more prosperous, and globally respected Nigeria.
The distance between Abuja and Washington, Lagos and London, Kano and Toronto, or Enugu and Melbourne may be measured in thousands of kilometres. But the distance between patriotism and national transformation is measured only by our willingness to act.
Nigeria’s future belongs to all of us.
