Senator Yayi at 57: The Man, The Mandate, The Momentum

By Segun Olatunji

Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, celebrates his 57th birthday today, August 10, 2026, marking another milestone in a formidable political career. The distinguished lawmaker, who currently serves as the Senator for Ogun West and chairs the powerful Senate Committee on Appropriations, remains one of the most recognisable and strategic figures in Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly. Known for his exceptional political staying power, sharp financial mind and deep grassroots connections, Adeola’s 57th birthday serves as both a reflection on a stellar legislative journey and a launchpad for his future aspirations. Today’s occasion is very special as it marks a pivotal moment for Senator Adeola as the officially endorsed consensus governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State in the forthcoming general elections.

The Man and the Milestone

Born on August 10, 1969, at the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, Adeola’s story is a classic narrative of hard work meeting opportunity. Growing up in the bustling Alimosho area of Lagos State, he quickly developed a reputation for diligence. He pursued a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Accounting from the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (formerly Ondo State Polytechnic, Owo), eventually rising to become a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN).

Before diving into the chaotic waters of Nigerian politics, Adeola built a solid corporate foundation. He spent 12 years as an accountant with The Guardian Newspapers Limited and later worked as a Senior Auditor at Olatunji Omoyeni & Co. He eventually ventured out to establish SOOTEM Nigeria Limited, a successful tax consultancy firm. This deep financial expertise would later become his signature weapon in public service, shaping his reputation as a master of public accounts and budgetary frameworks.

However, Senator Adeola’s 57th birthday finds him at the absolute zenith of his political career. A chartered accountant by profession and a Fellow of ICAN, his trajectory from the Lagos State House of Assembly to the House of Representatives and eventually as a two-term Senator representing Lagos West, reads like a masterclass in political resilience.

A Masterclass in Legislative Longevity

What sets Senator Adeola apart from many of his contemporaries is his historic “West-to-West” political movement. He holds the unique distinction of winning consecutive legislative elections across two different states—a rare feat in Nigeria’s modern political history.

His journey started in 2003 when he was elected to the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Alimosho Constituency 2. After two highly productive terms at the state level, he stepped up to the Federal stage in 2011, winning election to the House of Representatives to represent the Alimosho Federal Constituency. During this time, his financial acumen shone through as he served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts.

By 2015, Adeola made history by transitioning to the upper legislative chamber, winning the election to represent Lagos West—the largest senatorial district in Nigeria by population. After serving Lagos West diligently until 2023, he pulled off an ingenious political masterstroke. With his ancestral roots deeply entrenched in the Pahayi quarters in Ilaro, Yewa South, he successfully transitioned and shifted his political base back to Ogun State. In the 2023 general elections, he won the Ogun West Senatorial seat with an overwhelming mandate.

Today, as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Adeola is central to national development. He acts as a primary legislative pillar supporting the State House, Abuja and working in alignment with the Federal economic agenda. Therefore, his 57th birthday isn’t just an occasion for personal reflection, but a high-stakes gathering of Nigeria’s political elite that signals the shape of things to come, particularly in Ogun State from 2027.

The 2027 consensus and breaking the Ogun West Jinx

The major significance of Senator Yayi’s 57th birthday lies in his solid positioning for the 2027 Ogun State governorship race. In April 2026, Governor Dapo Abiodun shook the state’s political landscape by officially unveiling Senator Adeola Yayi as the APC consensus governorship candidate for 2027. This historical political alignment successfully brought together long-standing regional rivals, including Hon. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka (GNI) and Hon. Isiaq Abiodun Akinlade, under one banner.

For decades, Ogun West, comprising the Yewa-Awori people, has faced political marginalisation; not allowed to produce a governor since the state’s creation in 1976. As Yayi steps into his 57th year, his candidacy represents the most viable opportunity the zone has ever had to break this long-standing jinx. The APC consensus governorship candidate’s dual heritage – paternal roots in Yewaland and maternal ties to Kemta, Abeokuta (Egbaland) – positions him uniquely as a
cross-regional bridge builder capable of uniting the state’s distinct political blocs.

A launchpad for a Unified Campaign

The momentum surrounding Senator Yayi’s birthday has effectively transformed the celebration into a pre-campaign launchpad. Over the last month, a groundswell of powerful endorsements has consolidated his frontline status. Notably, the Ogun State Council of Baales and various retirees’ networks have formally pledged their support. Just days ago, over 17,000 teachers from across the state’s 20 local government areas gathered at the Ake Palace Pavilion to endorse Senator Yayi, drawn by his promises to fully implement the National Teachers’ Policy.

Furthermore, high-profile endorsements from former President Olusegun Obasanjo and massive solidarity rallies by the Yayi Progressives Movement in Abeokuta as well as Ogun West Professionals for Yayi’s (OGWPY) voter sensitisation, education and enlightenment rallies at the grassroots not only show that the Ogun West lawmaker’s acceptance stretches far beyond his immediate senatorial district, but it’s also being further consolidated at home.

Grassroots Empowerment: The Birthday Tradition

For Yayi, birthdays are less about personal indulgence and more about structured philanthropy. Over the years, his birthday celebrations have turned into massive community development showcases across Ogun State.

His style of representation emphasises self-reliance and infrastructural support. Past milestones have seen the mass distribution of high-capacity transformers to rural and urban Community Development Associations (CDAs), illuminating areas that had been in darkness for years. His “mega empowerment” schemes have provided thousands of constituents with functional tools such as:

. Mini-buses, tricycles, and ambulances for local health centers.

. Tractors and mechanised farming implements for agricultural cooperatives.

. Industrial sewing machines, deep freezers, and grinding machines for market women.

. Scholarships and bursary awards for thousands of tertiary students across the three senatorial districts of Ogun State through the Yayi Scholarship Programme.

This consistent approach to welfare ensures that whenever August 10 arrives, it is the ordinary citizens on the streets of Ilaro, Ota, Ipokia, Ado-Odo, Ogun Central and Ogun East who celebrate the loudest.

The Road Ahead: The 2027 Horizon

As Senator Adeola enters his 57th year and blows out his birthday candles, the political chatter around him is fixed firmly on the horizon; the message is clear. Having conquered the legislative space over the last two decades, Senator Yayi is widely recognised as a frontrunner for the 2027 Ogun State gubernatorial race. Backed by Governor Abiodun’s machinery, championed by the youth, and anchored by an extensive infrastructure scorecard in Ogun West and across the entire state, Senator Adeola is no longer just another aspirant – he is the man to beat. His 57th birthday marks the definitive transition from a seasoned lawmaker into the presumptive custodian of Ogun State’s future.

The transition from a seasoned lawmaker to a chief executive is a path many believe he is well-equipped to handle. Backed by a strong political structure and endorsed informally by various pan-Yewa groups and political stakeholders, his performance as Ogun West’s representative is viewed as a live audition for the state’s top job. Navigating the complex web of intra-party alliances and regional dynamics in Ogun State will require all of his trademark tactical brilliance, but if his track record is any indication, Yayi thrives when the stakes are high.

Cheers to the Aremo of Yewaland

Beyond the fierce political battles and the heavy responsibility of national budgeting, Senator Adeola remains a family man. Standing steadily by his side throughout this journey is his wife, Mrs. Temitope Adeola. Together, they have managed the pressures of public life with grace.

Turning 57 is a milestone of maturity, readiness and consolidated influence. From his early days as a young chartered accountant to his current role as a legislative titan, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola has proved that longevity in public service is achieved through adaptability and a dedication to the people. As well-wishers, colleagues and constituents toast to his health today, the consensus is clear: Senator Yayi’s impactful journey is still unfolding. Happy 57th Birthday, Distinguished Senator!

Yayi ni jo, Yayi ni jare!
