At 67, Okowa Stands Where Destiny Meets History

By Paul Mumeh

Politics is often described as a game of numbers. In Nigeria, it is equally a test of endurance, timing, resilience and survival. Few have navigated its turbulent currents with the dexterity of Senator Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, CON, who clocks 67 today.
His story is not merely that of a politician who rose through the ranks. It is the chronicle of a man who patiently climbed every rung of public service, with each office serving as preparation for greater responsibility.
From Secretary of a Local Government Council to Council Chairman, State Commissioner, Secretary to the Delta State Government, Senator of the Federal Republic, two-term Governor of Delta State, and ultimately the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election, Okowa’s political journey has been one of deliberate ascent rather than accidental elevation.
Not every chapter, however, ended in triumph.
His acceptance of the vice-presidential ticket alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was, in hindsight, perhaps the greatest gamble of his political career. The ticket failed at the polls, marking his first experience on the losing side of a national election. It was a sobering reminder that even the most accomplished political careers are not immune to the unpredictable verdict of democracy.
The University of Ibadan-trained medical doctor has, nevertheless, built an enviable electoral record. From his first electoral contest to his last personal election, he has never suffered defeat at the ballot in any race he personally contested. In a country where political fortunes rise and collapse with astonishing speed, such consistency is exceptional and deserves acknowledgment.
Yet politics is a living organism. It evolves with circumstances, reshapes loyalties and redraws familiar alliances.
The ongoing political realignment across Nigeria eventually compelled Okowa to leave the PDP—the platform on which he built much of his national stature—and align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). It was a decision that generated fierce debate, attracted criticism from old allies, won commendation from new associates, and reinforced an enduring truth: in politics, permanence belongs neither to parties nor to alliances, but to interests and convictions as defined by the actors themselves.
Now, another defining chapter beckons.
The road to the 2027 general election is gradually unfolding, and in Delta State it promises to be one of the most fiercely contested political battles in recent memory. Okowa’s reported ambition to return to the Senate sets the stage for an intriguing contest against the incumbent senator, who is equally determined to retain the seat. The field is expected to become even more competitive with formidable contenders from the PDP, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and other political platforms, each convinced that Delta’s political equation can be rewritten.
For the first time in many years, even admirers ask the inevitable question: can the man who has never lost an election preserve that remarkable record?
Only history can answer.
History, however, has a curious habit of rewarding those who have consistently shaped it. Whether 2027 becomes another victorious chapter or a different kind of milestone, Senator Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa has already secured an enduring place in the political history of Delta State and Nigeria. His contributions to governance, public administration and democratic development cannot be erased by the outcome of any single election.
At 67, he stands not merely at another birthday but at the crossroads where legacy meets destiny—where yesterday’s accomplishments confront tomorrow’s possibilities.
The next chapter remains unwritten. The electorate will write its final pages.
Until then, the man, the moment and the movement he continues to inspire remain subjects of national attention.
Happy 67th Birthday, Senator Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, CON.
May Almighty God grant you good health, renewed strength, abiding wisdom and the grace to embrace whatever history has yet prepared.

Paul Mumeh writes from Abuja, Federal Capital Territory.
