Unidentified gunmen on Tuesday reportedly trailed and opened fire on the convoy of Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party and a leading figure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
The incident occurred as Obi and his entourage approached the Benin residence of elder statesman and former Edo State Governor, John Odigie-Oyegun.
According to a statement issued by Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) spokesman Ibrahim Umar, the attack has generated widespread concern from supporters within Nigeria and abroad. The statement confirmed that gunshots were fired at the convoy but assured the public that Obi and other ADC leaders present in Edo State were not harmed.
In a brief remark following the incident, Obi reportedly expressed deep disappointment that such an attack could occur at the residence of a respected national figure like Chief Odigie-Oyegun, who he noted has served the state with honour and integrity. Obi was said to have displayed cartridges allegedly recovered from the scene.
POMR further referenced alleged threats made in July 2025 by Monday Okpebholo, who had reportedly warned Obi against entering Edo State without permission — a claim the governor later refuted. The media office described the development as part of a “troubling pattern.”
The statement reiterated that, under Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), every Nigerian citizen has the right to freedom of movement and association, including presidential aspirants.
As of the time of this report, security agencies have not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
