The headquarters of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), located in the Central Business District of Abuja, was on Saturday engulfed by fire.
The blaze was reported to have started on the fourth floor of the building, sending thick smoke into the sky and causing panic among workers and residents in the area.
A staff member of Zenith Bank operating within the FMBN premises, Mr. Anthony Ameh, described the fire as severe, saying efforts by emergency responders were yet to bring the situation under control.
“The fire is so intense. About four trucks of the Federal Fire Service are here, but they have not been able to quench it,” he said.
Operatives of the Federal Fire Service and other emergency agencies were seen battling the inferno as of the time of filing this report.
The cause of the fire had not been established, and there was no immediate information regarding casualties or the extent of damage to property.
Authorities are expected to commence investigations to determine the origin of the incident after the fire is fully contained.
