The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed September 19, 2026, for the conduct of five by-elections across four states, including Delta.News
The elections will comprise one federal constituency and four state constituencies in Delta, Gombe, Bauchi and Kano states.
In Delta State, the by-election will be held in Udu State Constituency, following the declaration of the seat vacant by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly.
The seat became vacant after the member representing Udu State Constituency was reported to have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The development subsequently created the need for a fresh election to fill the vacant seat in accordance with the relevant electoral provisions.
According to INEC, the other state constituencies where by-elections will be conducted are Disina and Sakwa in Bauchi State and Dawakin Kudu in Kano State.
The federal constituency election will take place in Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State.
INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Tunde Oketola, disclosed the election schedule in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
The September 19 exercise is expected to provide eligible voters in the affected constituencies with an opportunity to elect new representatives to fill the vacant seats.
Political parties and their candidates are expected to intensify their preparations ahead of the polls as INEC commences the implementation of the timetable for the by-elections.
