Nigeria does not possess nuclear weapons and has never pursued a nuclear weapons programme, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has said.
Ibrahim made the clarification while addressing the UN General Assembly during the 108th Plenary Meeting of the 80th Session in New York.
He said Nigeria remained committed to global efforts to end nuclear weapons testing and eliminate weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).
According to him, Nigeria has established institutions and regulatory mechanisms to monitor nuclear-related activities, including the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission.
Ibrahim, who is also Chairman of the UN Committee on Budget and Administration, said Nigeria collaborates with countries including Russia, China, France, South Korea and the United States on nuclear-related matters.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and said Africa remained a nuclear-weapon-free zone.
The envoy also urged UN member states to sustain efforts towards the complete elimination of nuclear weapons testing, describing the objective as necessary for a safer world.
