The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, has appealed to the Delta State Government to expedite the completion and energisation of the hospital’s newly installed transformer to enable the full restoration of electricity and normal healthcare services.
The doctors noted that while they appreciate the government’s intervention in procuring a replacement transformer following the failure of the previous one in June, the installation process is yet to be completed, leaving the hospital dependent on limited generator power and affecting the delivery of specialised medical services.
In a statement signed by the association’s President, Dr Isaac Aghogho, General Secretary, Dr Nwachukwu Ogochukwu, and Public Relations Officer, Dr Chijioke Asogwa, the ARD said the prolonged power challenge has impacted some key hospital operations, including inpatient admissions, intensive care services, neonatal care and dialysis, with some patients requiring referral to other health facilities.
The association observed that the situation has also affected residency training, undergraduate medical education and overall hospital productivity, while patients seeking specialist treatment have had to travel elsewhere for care, often at considerable financial and emotional cost.
While commending the Delta State Government for responding to the challenge by providing a replacement transformer, the doctors expressed optimism that the remaining installation and commissioning work would be concluded soon to restore the hospital to full operation.
They appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other relevant authorities to give priority attention to completing the outstanding work, stressing that the restoration of electricity would strengthen healthcare delivery and improve access to specialist medical services for residents of the state.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining constructive engagement with the state government and the hospital management, expressing confidence that the power challenge would be resolved in the interest of patients, healthcare workers and the continued development of Delta State’s foremost teaching hospital.
