PORT HARCOURT – Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that security remains the bedrock of every prosperous society, stressing that no meaningful development can take place without peace, stability and effective protection of lives and property.
The Governor made the declaration on Sunday at the Gala Night of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration held in Port Harcourt, where he commended the Nigerian Army for its steadfast commitment to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and preserving peace.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dagogo Wokoma, Governor Fubara said the sacrifices of the nation’s armed forces continue to guarantee the country’s unity, democracy and socio-economic progress.
“Security remains the vital foundation of any prosperous society, and a nation sleeps in peace because brave men and women stand awake in its defence,” he said.
The Governor paid glowing tribute to fallen soldiers, describing them as heroes whose sacrifices would never be forgotten.
“We honour those who have paid the ultimate price and stand in solidarity with the families they left behind. Their sacrifices continue to preserve our nation’s unity, protect our territorial integrity, and sustain our democracy,” he stated.
Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, noting that the partnership between the Rivers State Government and the Army’s 6 Division has enhanced peace, security and economic activities across the state.
He praised the military for creating a secure environment that allows residents and businesses to thrive.
“We sincerely appreciate the Nigerian Army’s relentless efforts in maintaining law and order in Rivers State, creating an environment where residents can live and sleep peacefully,” he added.
Speaking at the event, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the Nigerian Army Day Celebration provides an opportunity to deepen civil-military relations, strengthen public support and execute impactful community development projects.
He disclosed that as part of the celebration, the Army renovated community secondary schools and provided solar-powered boreholes to improve the living conditions of host communities.
The Army Chief stressed that lasting national security cannot be achieved by the military alone but requires the trust, cooperation and active participation of citizens.
“As an Army, we recognize the indispensable role of the people in supporting our efforts to achieve national security objectives. Enduring security can only be achieved through a strong partnership between the military, other security agencies and the communities we are sworn to protect,” he said.
Shaibu assured Nigerians that the Army would continue working with other security and intelligence agencies, as well as local communities, to combat security threats and create a safe environment for national development.
“I urge all Nigerians to continue to trust the Nigerian Army and remain steadfast in supporting our collective efforts toward ensuring lasting peace, stability and national development,” he said.
The gala night featured entertainment by music stars Mr P (formerly of P-Square), Duncan Mighty, the Rivers State Cultural Troupe and other performers.
